Leather care is a great skill and one that is in high demand for a variety of projects. When it comes to the “right” way to do leather work there are actually two different thoughts of the best way to go about the process. The first one is concerned with caring for the leather in a way that makes it look good but also shows the age and tells the story of the leather. The other is to try to make the leather looking as new as possible even if that means covering up some of the old wear.
While we understand loving the look of new leather, there is something beautiful about aged leather. Keep your leather chesterfield sofa looking beautiful with these tips.
Our 4 Steps for Beautiful Aged Leather
Dry Wet Leather
It’s important to not let water sit on leather. Don’t rub the water. Use a blotting motion to get rid of any water you can before letting the leather air dry. If the leather object is a bag, it’s important to spread it out with newspaper on the inside – this will help the sides dry out instead of folding over itself.
Condition Over Dried Leather
This is simple to do and all it takes is one leather conditioner (quality matters – don’t skimp) and then wipe off any excess.
Clean Dirty Leather
Leather can take a lot of things that diminish its look. Dirt, dust, even oil from dirty hands. Handle your leather with clean hands and make sure to keep any leather in good shape with regular light cleaning and a deeper leather cleaner once or twice a year for deeper treatment of the leather. You want to use a circular overlapping motion to make sure everything is covered.
Store Unused Leather Items
Leather does a lot better if it is properly stored and cared for. If you can find a spot that is away from direct sunlight, heat, dust, and humidity then you will be much happier with how the leather holds up. Thicker leather objects like bags or jackets should be aired out every couple weeks.
Follow these steps and you’ll be very happy with how your treated leather looks and feels!
