
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a communication protocol used by mobile phone carriers and phones to replace SMS messages with a richer text-messaging system that includes phonebook polling (for service discovery) and the ability to transmit in-call multimedia. It is a component of the IP Multimedia Subsystem.
RCS was founded in 2007 and was acquired by the GSM Association (GSMA), an industry trade association that represents mobile operators around the world, in 2008. The GSMA agreed on a Universal Profile in 2016, which is a set of standards that may be used by all mobile carriers, phone makers, and software suppliers to assist install RCS on devices.
The system was launched and as a result of this, it provided Android users with a new messaging platform.
