Music’s evolution between the mid-60s to the wee years of the 80s paved the way for the great music we have today. Whether you’re a classic rock fanatic or are new to the genre, check out these five must-have classic rock records.
“Axis: Bold as Love”
Any classic rock collection is not complete without something by Jimi Hendrix. Although every one of Jimi’s albums are awe-inspiring, Axis: Bold as Love, released in 1967, shows the gamut of talent he and his band possess. Every song has different feelings, energies and vibes that take you on a brief yet adventurous trip through the swinging, psychedelic 60s.
“Deep Purple”
Deep Purple is another definite addition to any classic rock collection. Their 1969 self-titled album was their third release and has some of the most creative songs ever made. For instance, “April” starts with a guitar solo, goes into a full-blown classical orchestra and ends in pure rock-n-roll. The entire album is a true auditory voyage for the soul with impactful, fervid rhythms.
“Rocka Rolla”
Rocka Rolla is the album that began Judas Priest’s musical stardom in 1974 with heavy blues-based rock. Each song is a total jam that yanks at your spirit to take it soaring through the air! This is because of how the entire album encapsulates the distillation of human experience. From an anthem for rock-n-roll to the pain of heartbreak, there’s a little of everything in this album.
“2112”
An absolute musical masterpiece, Rush’s 2112 tells the story of a dystopian future without music that’s rejected by the powers-that-be. Released in 1976, the first half of the album is one continuous song. The last half includes individual songs like “A Passage to Bangkok” and “Something for Nothing.” You can listen to it repeatedly and not ever tire of this album.
“On through the Night”
Def Leppard’s On through the Night vinyl, was their 1980 debut that set the tone for their decades-long fame. Fans across the UK and US fell in love with them on contact and when you listen to the album, you’ll see why. Every song is a journey; taking you through the ups and downs of adrenaline to straight rock and roll.
