When shipping items over long distances it is important to choose the correct boxes and padding material to ensure that they arrive at their destination in perfect condition. To pack well, you must first choose the right crating services. Check out our guide to selecting the most suitable cardboard box for your next shipment.
Use new and high-quality corrugated cardboard boxes
There are three types of corrugated cardboard boxes: single wall, double wall and triple wall. The shape and weight of your item, as well as the forces to which your box may be subjected during shipping and handling (for example, if it is stacked), will determine the type of box you should choose. The difference between each type of box is the number of layers of cardboard. The most frequently used box is the single-wall corrugated cardboard box, which consists of a single flute and each side is covered with a liner.
For heavier items, use a double-walled corrugated box, which is made up of two sets of grooves separated by a liner at the top and bottom. The double-wall box is stronger than a single wall box. For very heavy items, opt for a triple-wall corrugated box, which consists of three sets of grooves and a liner between the layers of grooves and on the outer edges. The more layers of grooves, the stronger the box.
Look for the box manufacturer’s certificate
All corrugated cardboard boxes used by crating companies come with a box manufacturer’s certificate, like the one pictured here, which gives you information about the box’s dimensions and strength.
The following table specifies the information appearing on most packing certificates. The combined weight of the item and the cushioning material should not exceed the recommended weight.
Mullen test and compressive strength on edge
Corrugated boards are manufactured to two standards: the Mullen test (or burst test) and edge compressive strength (ECT). Mullen’s test measures the burst strength of corrugated boards (expressed in psi). For example, a box subjected to Mullen’s test and rated at 200 can withstand a force of 200 pounds per square inch applied directly to the linerboard. Many customers prefer Mullen’s tested boxes to protect heavier contents if they are concerned about the linerboard shattering. The minimum allowable face value for courier shipping of boxes subject to Mullen’s test is 200 lbs.
The ECT test measures the compressive strength from the top to the bottom of the carton in the box. This test looks at two types of resistance: box compressive strength (BCT) and stacking resistance. If a customer is concerned about the maximum weight a box can support, they should check the ECT index. The lightest box allowed by the ECT test for courier shipping is 32 lbs. Sheets of corrugated cardboard used to make all boxes over 14 ”x 14” x 14 ”must be 44 lbs ECT.
