Difference between LED TV and HD TV

In this technology driven VUCA (Volatile, Ambiguous, Uncertain and Complex) world, every day we have a new innovation waiting at our doorstep, promising that the satisfaction or the experience that one will have while consuming it, would be better than its earlier version.

Gone are the days when TVs were nothing but dumb boxes, now these gadgets are smarter than ever, and they are never settling for its previous version.

In this article, we will understand which TV is better-LED TV or HD TV? Before coming to that let us understand what an LED TV is. LED (Light Emitting Diode) is basically the backlight that is provided to a TV unit, instead of Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CFL). LED is not a display; it is a combination of an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel and LED light. There are many advantages that LED has to offer when compared to CFL:

  • Using LED backlight makes the TV structure very slim, some screens are as slim as 0.5 inches or 13mm.
  • LED TV provides greater contrast ratio, dimming range and wider color gamut which therefore enhances the viewing experience of an individual. LED TV will even provide sharper color accuracy. Making viewing experience completely life like.
  • LED TV significantly reduces the weight of the TV and the TV sets are much cooler at the time of operation as compared to CFL based TV sets.
  • The electricity that LED TVs consume is 20% to 30% less as compared to CFL TV sets.
  • LED TVs have a longer life span and they are more reliable at the time of usage.

LED TV also caters to the design or the look of the television when placed in the drawing room of an individual. Coming to High Definition Television or popularly known as HD TV, we see that it is a newer technology that has replaced Standard Definition Television or SD TV. The main difference between the two is the picture quality, HD TV has a much better picture quality to offer or I may quote “how humans view the real world”.

HD TV also uses digital signals instead of analog which further enhances the picture quality and removes disturbance that might occur. Having an amazing picture quality not only enhances your viewing, binge watching experience but also your gaming experience (yes, games can even be played in a smart TV after making the required adjustments through the operating system or commonly known as remote).

Nowadays most of the gaming sets like XBOX One will not even support in SD TV. HD TV come in two types, full HD and HD. Full HD obviously has better scanning which further improves the quality. The picture quality of HD TV is measured mainly in the terms of 1080p, 720p or 480p. 1080p, 720p or 480p basically refers to the number of vertical lines (detail level put into the picture) or vertical pixels (the smallest element on a display).

Therefore we see how LCD was replaced by LED for reliable, low electricity consumption and thinner TVs, and then how SD TVs are replaced by HD TV as it provided increased number of pixels to enhance the picture quality and uses digital signals instead of analog to remove any kind of disturbance that might occur while viewing television.

Coming to the question we see that it is kind of irrational as because the two units (LED TV and HD TV) that we are comparing are not actually comparable. LED makes a TV look thinner and enhance the structure or the build of the TV, while on the other hand HD TV enhances the picture quality, therefore enhancing the total experience an individual has with the TV.

The best choice to make would be choosing an LED TV with HD Quality picture, and better than best would be choosing an LED TV with 1080p HD TV though the budget of an individual could be a limiting factor here.

As said above that the technology never settles, we see now that LED technology is now getting replaced by OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) which works without a backlight because it emits visible light and HD TVs are replaced by Ultra HD.
